CYCLING

Listed below are some of the opportunities for cycling in mid Wales and Shropshire.

Mid Wales is one of the most beautiful and least densely populated areas of the UK, with few people there are fewer vehicles with the consequence that there is very little traffic on the network of lanes that cover the area. It is, however, one of the most hilly regions in the country! This means spectacular views across the lovely countryside but little by way of easy cycling. The few flat exceptions to this are Lake Vyrnwy, the section of Lon Las Cymru (the Welsh National Route) along the gated back road from Llangurig south to Rhyayder, the traffic free trails alongside the Elan Valley Reservoirs and the Mawddach Trail on the course of the old railway along the estuary from Dolgellau to Barmouth. This are is also blessed with one of the most extensive networks of Bridleways in the whole of the UK, so if you are a keen mountain biker there are a whole range of legal tracks and trails waiting to be explored.

The Welsh National Route, Lon Las Cymru, crosses the heart of Mid Wales. The more popular eastern option passes through Dolgellau, Machynlleth, Llanidloes, Rhyader and Builth Wells. The tougher off-road western option uses long sections of forestry tracks on the way from Machynlleth to Devils Bridge and Llanwrttyd Wells.
